Epic Summer Institute

Students from all five boroughs and seven partner schools joined Epic's professional company during the Summer of 2007 for the inaugural Epic Summer Institute.

In the mornings of this 2 week institute, students took acting and writing classes from Epic Teaching Artists. In the afternoons, they created original characters and writing for a new adaptation of The Visit. Originally written by Friedrich Durrenmatt (adapted by Ron Russell and Zak Berkman), The Visit was newly adapted and performed by the student company, Epic Next and Epic's professional company.

Teaching Artist Training funded by the Dana Foundation. Additional support for institute is provided by Nilaja Sun. Additional support for Epic Next is provided by Emily Bickford Lansbury Endownment.

Teaching Artists: Rachael Holmes, Suzana Berger, Brandt Adams, Vernice Miller
Director of Education: Melissa Friedman
Mentor to Epic Next Company: Godfrey L. Simmons Jr.

Shaddeus Schill (Schill's Father): "Pastor don't you remember the way life used to be every Sunday morning? The choir jumping and singing their hearts out singing praises to the high heavens. Sister Moore falling out, before you even began to preach? What happened to us? I believe in being in this condition, God is testing our faith. Can we can endure through tedious circumstances or just crash and burn at the first sign of trouble."
- Mathew Davis summer 07

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City December 2002:

"Your Antigone-In-Progress program has been a strong source of support for many students and I thank you for your tremendous efforts. It is always a pleasure to unite with people and organizations that are committed to improving the quality of life for our City's youth and to enhancing the arts community."
