The Freedom Project
Is America the land of the free? Within the Freedom Project students learn about the constitution through performing their own response to one amendment as well as observing and responding to other students' performances. Students make a deep personal connection between the law and their own lives. Students apply their knowledge to current (political, economic, cultural, social) events. Students work as attorneys, witnesses and jurors as they put a character from the play on trial. Using a combination of textual evidence and creative imaginings, students work together to create a compelling case for their peers and their audience. "I can make connections from amendments to people, scenes and skits. It will be easy to remember my amendments after participating in this project." "The amendments were brought to life through humor and actions of the actors. The performance allowed the audience to understand the purpose of the Amendment." |
Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City December 2002: "Your Antigone-In-Progress program has been a strong source of support for many students and I thank you for your tremendous efforts. It is always a pleasure to unite with people and organizations that are committed to improving the quality of life for our City's youth and to enhancing the arts community." |
