For Educators
The Journeys Series is Epic's flagship education program. After seeing an Epic performance of one of the plays from Epic's repertoire ( Antigone, The Oresteia, The Visit, An Enemy of the People), students work with an Epic artist in their English classrooms to respond to the key socio-political questions of the play. They then write their own versions of the play and perform them alongside Epic's professional actors. The Journeys Series begins when an Epic Teaching Artist visits participating classrooms to actively engage students in the questions of the classical play. After two or three visits, Epic's professional actors perform Epic's adaptation of the play at the partner school. At this in-school performance, the students are asked how the questions raised in the play relate to their lives and their world. The Epic Teaching Artist returns to the classroom either guiding students in writing their own version of the Greek Chorus or through the construction of their own version of a Trial or the creation of a parallel plot in a Classical Collision. All of these residency models culminate in a performance for the community where students and professional perform side-by-side, seamlessly presenting student ideas and words alongside these 2500-year old classic plays |
Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City December 2002: "Your Antigone-In-Progress program has been a strong source of support for many students and I thank you for your tremendous efforts. It is always a pleasure to unite with people and organizations that are committed to improving the quality of life for our City's youth and to enhancing the arts community." |
